I know Rescue dogs are more 'vogue' now than a purebred pup that a breeder has
put a lot of work and planning and effort into just getting them ready and
checked out as healthy and sound for good pet homes. Most people ARE looking
for a rescue dog and would not even consider getting a nice pup from a breeder.
It's more politically correct.......
But lately.....We are now beginning to get buyers that tried the rescue Pet and
it was a nightmare for them...and now they are turning to breeders. Nothing
stays the same I guess......including the Sport of Dog Shows.
It doesn't take a genius to look around and see the entries at our once major
Specialties not even pulling a major to know that our time is about over.
There is NO WAY Specialty Clubs can survive on 2 pt. shows after paying AKC
costs, grounds, and judges expenses. It's not JUST that WE cannot afford
some of the expenses. Neither can the CLUBS at this rate.

If this is a unique transition, it is more likely it is going back to what it
used to be. Only a few can afford the sport, and only a few people would be
involved.
The sport survives through those who want it to. Those who disdain the modern
activities, move to something else. But, it will continue for those who want
to.
The rest, can do something else. Like, post on Facebook.

Within the past two years I've been on flights with owners with " rescue " dogs
( one In fact was a white GSD) ... My training and experience leads me to be
suspicious of EvERYThING human beings do, internally I doubted the disability
of both of those owners! I know ,shame on me, it didn't bother me but working
with criminals and kids my whole adult life I'm just naturally skeptical. I'd
never try to fly one of my dogs as a " therapy dog" although if I were flying
with my blind ex-wife I could certainly get away with it! Time to push my
Boulder back up the hill, the damn thing keeps falling back down! lol FB

You’ll have to say your dog is a ‘rescue’ dog and add it to one of the free
flights across country. I just posted to NAIA that 154 dogs were just flown
from California to New Jersey (to be spread out from there by vans) and that
another 250 were being flown to WA and OR. I’m assuming that shelters in ME,
NH, RI, NJ., WA and OR are empty and all the dogs that were in there found
owners….. and these ’new’ (mostly small 30lbs and under) dogs all have loving
homes.
So, there’s the answer… Nope, won’t work… almost all of those that work the
“retail rescue” don’t want anything to do with breeders and call “us” all (home
breeders and professional breeders) “puppy mills.”

I'm at the age where I just can't ( won't) spend ten hours in a car driving to
a dog show, and I refuse to fly an adult dog anywhere for any reason. Not only
is it expensive, it's all the other BS you go through flying dogs.... Why must
a dog be at the cargo center 3 ( cuss word ending in ing) before the flight!
The dog is the last thing on board, if the flight is 8 hours the dog is in the
crate minimum 11 hours, the cost is crazy. I've blown my top at least 3 or 4
times at the airport flying dogs, one time I thought I was going to jail ( not
proud of that incident) but like Popeye used to say " that's all I can stand
cuz I can't stand no more". No more flying dogs for me, and there are some up
coming shows that I would love to participate, but unless I get a driver for my
bitch, we ain't going... Call me Sisyphus! His life fits mine to a tee Some
days ya just don't want to go outside. Ed

Regarding some of the conversation earlier this morning about how small the
shows are and how this List seems to be shrinking along with the shows..... I
can certainly understand why.
We just shipped a one year old GSD puppy to a main hub airport.....a short
direct flight from Sacramento, Calif. The airline wouldn't even talk to us
without a # 700 crate....at the going rate of $902.00 for a 3 hr. direct
flight for an 80 lb. dog.........because his ears stand up!!
NO WONDER many are dropping out of this sport. IF it was one of the two nice
4 1/2 month old pups I have right now that had to ship out on the same direct
flight I would have to use a # 500 crate.. because their ears are up... for
$602.62!! for a 4 1/2 month old puppy?!.....And THAT is just the air
flight..not counting buying the crate and Health Certificate. Ridiculous!!
What is a buyer to do? What is a breeder/ exhibitor to do?? Can't keep
and show them all, yet can't sell them out of the area without adding another
$1,000 to the basic price for shipping.....or dropping the price to pet prices.
Bottom line....we are getting "driven out" or "flown" out of this Sport. For
ourselves.....and buyers.
You can't afford to utilize the airlines to ship your dog because of the
ridiculous request for ears nottouching the top of the crate.....and that
leaves us driving for DAYS to a National. Easier to just not
go until they become more centralized for all of us.
THAT'S NO FUN! It does seem easier to quit than to beat our heads against
the brick wall.......
