Host: GSD Club of Detroit
Cost: Free! :-D
Date/Time: April 17th from 1 to 3 pm

Where: Borders
Bookstore (Upstairs Cafe) in Canton.
Borders is located at 43435 Ford
Rd, Canton, MI 48187 on the southwest corner of Ford Road
and Morton Taylor.  It's easy access to the freeway, equal distance between
Detroit and Ann Arbor.

Focus will be AKC's herding program, with snippets of AKC Herding
history. Breeds eligible to compete.

Discuss A Course & C
Course primarily with a glossing over of B Course. The differences
between A & C (Fetching & Tending).

How to get started herding... what to expect at your first lessons
(fetching or tending)... what kind of equipment you need... what kind of dog...
working sheep/ducks/cattle... passing requirements by level/title for each
course.

Lecturer: Diane Wright

(Long winded bio: Diane Wright is an AKC Herding Judge with the unique
perspective of
having trialled 2 German Shepherd Dogs to their Herding Championships,
each exclusively from different courses.

Diane began herding in
1992 with a simple goal of earning a herding instinct certificate on her first
German Shepherd Dog. HC Pa-Gairs Kaiserin Chelsea CD, HX,
exceeded the goal finishing her Championship in 1997, becoming the
breed's 6th Herding Champion. (Back in the day herding titles were not
breed nor course specific; 'Chelsea' titled on sheep from A Course.)

Diane's second herding champion GSD, 'Jack', HC Windy Acres' Quintessential
HXCs, started out learning A Course concepts, then switched to tending.
Jack was typical of an upright dog in his approach to herding- fast,
close & in as straight of a line as possible! One hopes that with
consistent practice this over-exuberance gives way to stock sense as the dog
matures, but it did not seem to be working that way for Jack.

Diane attended her first tending clinic when Jack was four. She has said
didn't expect to learn much, because everything she'd heard about the
tending had written it off. "The sheep were trained to follow the
person, the dog was just heeling, etc." From her experience with A
Course she "knew" that no sheep in its right mind would walk calmly past a GSD
standing by a gate opening. "Tending people were nuts." ;-)

Within a very short period of time, Diane went from doubting skeptic to
tending person.

"The end result, a dog that can work stock
efficiently & calmly can be obtained by teaching tending concepts.
An advanced/experienced tending dog has the same tools in his toolbox as dogs
that started out fetching. Both gather & fetch. Both can work
in pens & load & unload stock from trailers. Both can move stock from point A
to point B. The beginning steps & the working style is a bit different but the
final product is the same."

Both Chelsea & Jack were unique in that they did not trial with a 'home court'
advantage. All legs were earned in different locations/on different
stock than which they trained. The 'local' trials were in Nebraska, Ohio &
Missouri. Chelsea also earned legs at GSD Nationals in Georgia,
California, Kentucky & Arizona. Since switching to C Course, trial
sites are again limited. Jack earned his legs in Texas, Massachusetts
& Washington.

Diane is an outspoken proponent for helping
dogs learn the skills they need to run a course, not teaching the dog
the course.

Diane lives on a small farm in Battle Creek, MI with
her German Shepherd Dogs, three cats, too many sheep, a pair of peacocks and
guardian donkey. Her new goal is to finish a Dual Champion &
has a handsome, promising Dallas son, Ch Laxfield's Cold Hard Cash
'Cash', to work with. Jack is retired from trialling, but is the
right-hand dog at home.)
