Personally, the few shows that I have attended lately may have had smaller
entries, but the quality has been very, very good.

Breeders will continue breeding what wins, and that bottom line is defined
by the judges. On that, Helen is 100% correct. Like anything else, when
too much emphasis gets place in one aspect, as in with shoulders, then other
things lose importance, and they shouldn't

I dont ask my dogs to climb ladders or go thru tunnels, that's not required
on the standard. I ask them to do what I tell them to do, just because
they live in my house. But they should be able to do any work I ask of them
without me being concerned that their ligaments are too lose and they can
get hurt doing a turn while herding, or that their neck is too short and
keeps them from tracking, or that their topline is soft and they get tired too
quick when hiking or swimming. Balance is the key. Not extreme front.
Not extreme rear.

Balance. More than a movement breed (and I do LOVE a good moving dog)
this is a working breed. All pieces must work well together.

Once again, there are good judges out there. Do your homework.

If you have read the letters to the editor in the Reviews and listen to
comments of people
watching the GSD at shows the GSD are getting negative comments to prove
what you are saying below.

The GSD does need to be a functional dog and way too many dogs
are placing that shouldn't be. I know you get more reach with the way a
dog is built but it
is not a sound dog in usage if not the breed standard. How many of these
GSD's could place in conformation classes, work all day at doing dock
jumping, Lure Coursing, weight pull, Agility, etc. I have seen GSD's do just
that to become total dog. If a GSD can not then can they herd sheep, climb
and go over a ladder, tracking as well as perform in conformation this was
what a GSD should be able to do if they conform to even the AKC Standard.
There is more to owning and breeding GSD's than a judges choice and placing
at a conformation show. Health, temperament, breed standards, soundness
in movement should always be the most important. The problem I see is
everyone does try to breed for what they believe to be correct but people tend
to
like what they prefer which not always the standard of a breed. It does
not matter what
Standard you follow AKC, UKC, FCI, etc. everyone has their preference of
what they like as I do.

These comments are not directed at any judge, breeder, owner regardless of
what you do with your GSD just my views on what I have read and listened
to others comments at shows and my own thoughts.

Time for Judges to stop putting up dogs with the extreme front reach
and the sloppy ass-end. That ass-end IS a very serious fault that our
Judges are consciously deciding to downplay in order to put their own
personal preference on what wins that day. They are re-writing the
Standard. The sloppy dog wins and breeders reproduce same.
As our numbers decrease, the All Breed shows become more
important. We must now have dogs that can win in both arena's.
Time to stop and judge to the Standard. Fronts are not everything,
tough I love them too. No more bad asses..............puns intended.
