Does the AKC still allow an observer in the ring? Maybe instead of making the National seminar a requirement, it could be optional... The breeder who wants to judge a futurity could choose among the National seminar, watching a DVD, and observing in the ring with a specialty judge...choose, say, two out of three... I do think it would be helpful for someone to stand in the middle of the ring with the judge and learn/talk about the actual ring procedure etc..... When I first started judging, I wasn't nervous about choosing the dogs, I was nervous about the actual procedure... Making sure it was organized, and consistent for each exhibitor....potential breeder/futurity judges know the good dogs, but might benefit from observing in the ring with a specialty judge if for no other reason than to be up close and personal in the center of the ring and talk about procedure .
