We have been looking at the Cabella's 1.5 hp grinder - I know one of our herding people has used one for years - grinds up everything with bones (poultry necks/backs/legs, etc. It is solid and works like new. My sister has been looking for one to use for the rabbits she is starting to raise for dog food. a friend wants it to grind up poultry and game for the dogs. I have been told the grinders go on sale periodically and we are waiting. It was irreparable, so I went about to purchase another one. Of course, when I buy things like this, I go to Ebay, then search the internet for other information, and invariably end up going back to Ebay to purchase. After looking at a lot of different models on Ebay, I ended up with a 1.6 HP 1000W ELECTRIC MEAT GRINDER 1200 w/2FREE PLATES / 1YR WRNTY / INDUSTRIAL GRIND PWR / 1200W from seller Kitchenplustools I paid $99.00 plus $29.00 shipping and handling. I tried it out this weekend. I found some chicken legs and thighs for a reasonable price ($0.59/lb) and between that and the big turkey I bought to grind for the dogs at $0.19/lb and a lump of chicken breast meat we got for $0.99/lb for our consumption ? Grandma and I set about to grind meat. First thing we did was grind the breast meat into chicken hamburger. This chicken had been in the freezer for a while and was one big lump (which I hate). This machine powered through the semi frozen meat like it was butter. So, onto the legs and thighs for the dogs. BONES and all, I ran it through, it slowed down a little on the bones, but not much. I ran it through a second time on the smallest grinding plate ? and the bones were completely pulverized ? when I pulled the grinder head off, to clean it out before moving onto the turkey ? I got about maybe ¼ cup of pieces it wouldn?t grind through; otherwise, everything was in there. I also tried putting some carrots in while I was doing the chicken --- came through like nothing flat! Talk about excellent! I can?t wait to grind some more the next time and add some spinach, zucchini or whatever else I want to put into this ground meat. My uses are going to be for making quicker dog soups (to which I add rice), but I can imagine that making raw food won?t be that difficult either ? just got to find the meat at a good price. I then moved onto the turkey --- I carved it up (since the bones are too big to put through). All the meat I put through was deboned with the exception of the second section of the wing and tip and a couple of smaller bones in the breast meat. I left the smallest grinder plate on ? and a when it was all said and done, a 25lb turkey was ground in about 10 minutes (not including the carving time). It did get bogged down and shut off doing the second wing section on the second wing, but I reset, backed it up, and went forward again, and it powered through it with no problem. I also put through some frozen peas and carrots that had been in the freezer too long ? and it powered through it like nothing flat. The great thing about this machine is that is has a circuit breaker ? so if a jam bogs it down too much, it won?t fry the motor. Additionally, it has a reverse on the grinder so you can back it up, look down and see what is slowing things down, and push it forward again to reset and grind again. It also came with sausage fittings, so I can only imagine being able to make ground food in sausage casings. I?m going to have to see about finding them next! All in all, assuming this thing doesn?t fall apart in the next 1year, I think it was a very good investment, and with the price of dog food going into the outrageous level (I?m feeding Nutro Max ? regular price is $28.99 a bag/35lb ? with tax it?s like $0.90/lb.) When you can buy various meats on sale and veggies (or grow your own) then grind and freeze it for later use ? I think it?s something to start looking at. Oh yeah, I went back to ebay to get the information on the seller ? and they?ve got a sale going on ? same grinder is $79.00 + 29.00 s/h. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZkitchenplustools I?m sure there are other grinders out there that are good, but I thought this was a good one for the price. And the shipping was very fast ? got it in about 3-4 days. Also, I have nothing to gain from giving this information out, other than wanting to share.
