It is humbling - the most humbling dog training experience I have ever had. The
dog just understands so much better. It sure teaches you a lot about teamwork.
I forgot about the tests - normal PT runs should not be a problem if the dog
has had any kind of work. For HT you just need a dog with a some control or a
good handler and you should be able to do it without much, if any, prep. It was
an all-breed trial so we don't even know how many of them were GSDs. Hopefully
they had some test level sheep and were not running trial sheep.

Yes, I agree.
I wondered about the tested runs too...none at all in PT? (I always found
PT easier, using the fence as a guide, who knows?) And low for HT, but
perhaps first trials for some teams? Or maybe the sheep weren't used to "big
hairy dogs" and scattered????? So would be interested to hear....
I will say herding has always been one of the most humbling things I have
found to do with a dog <G>. My personal learning curve on how to read
sheep was just awful!

No Q's in B is not surprising as that is the most border-collie style
course and while a GSD can work it, it is not as easy with an upright dog who
naturally works close to the stock rather than a low running speed burner
who works well off the stock.
No Q's on C is what I would like to know about. Where those sheep a flock
or a collection of sheep put together for the run? I don't know who trialed
so I do not know how well they work, but that 30-45 min Advanced C run can
be incredibly challenging if those sheep were used in small groups on B or
A previously and then moved to C a few days before. It makes it an
interesting training challenge when practicing for a few hours but not so good
for
trail day. But I am speculating and not talking from any info from the
trial. I would assume that if the dogs and handlers are experienced, a couple
of trials used as practice with the flock will make them all work better on
the GSD only day.
I saw Reserve came off Advanced A and it is good to see those dogs/sheep
are working well. Not surprising that HIT came out of Started as the
difference in difficulty between Started and Advanced is very high, and a well
trained and handled started dog has a bit of an edge. But that dog does have
to be well trained and handled - it is not a gift.

Looking at the results, there are an incredibly low number of qualifiers.
Would love to hear about the conditions from any of the participants.
We had:
3 of 8 (shown) qualify in HT
ZERO out of 8 shown in PT
1 of 5 in Started
ZERO qualify in Intermediate
3 of 9 in Advanced and then NO qualifiers on either B or C course. Huh?
The dogs and handlers who did qualify...huge congrats for success!!!!
Just wondering what the heck happened?
