The New Frontier of Animal Law

In fall 2012, Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon will become the
first
institution to offer an advanced degree in animal law. Last week, I came
across
a very interesting article from the Portland Tribune examining the impact
that this could development could have on our society.
Interest in animal-focused litigation has been on an upswing nationwide,
reflecting our national love of pets and also our increasing disconnect
from
industries such as agriculture that rely on animals. Student chapters of
the Animal Legal Defense Fund have exploded from 12 to 162 in just over a
decade. Georgetown University was actually the first to offer a special
animal law fellowship, giving its students the opportunity to work in the
litigation
department of the Humane Society of the United States for a year upon
graduation. This program was launched in 2007 and funded in part by a $1
million endowment from animal rights activist Bob Barker of The Price is
Right fame.
This is an international phenomenon. In March 2010, voters in Switzerland
rejected a proposal to mandate state-funded lawyers to represent animals
in
court. Even still, Switzerland has some of the strictest animal-related
legislation in the world - pigs, goldfish and other social
animals can't be kept alone, and horses and cows must have "regular
exercise",
whatever that means.
Here in the U.S., eighteen cities (half of which are in California) have
enacted
animal "guardianship" laws...
