From the Cat Fanciers' Association - 7/22/05
Appropriate forwarding appreciated.
Fanciers;

I have received copies of some very good letters - thank you to everyone who
is working hard to defeat the Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS). This bill
would be extremely detrimental to the breeders and sellers of pedigreed
cats/purebred dogs as well as to those who rescue and place homeless pets.
Lets prevent the Animal Welfare Act being changed so that those who
place/sell cats and dogs directly at retail to the public would have to be
licensed and inspected by the federal government.

MORE HELP IS NEEDED!!

Six more cosponsors signed on to the PAWS bill in the House (HR2669) on
Wednesday.

Rep Miller, Brad [NC-13] - 7/20/2005
Rep Miller, George [CA-7] - 7/20/2005
Rep Berman, Howard L. [CA-28] - 7/20/2005
Rep Schakowsky, Janice D. [IL-9] - 7/20/2005
Rep Owens, Major R. [NY-11] - 7/20/2005
Rep Rangel, Charles B. [NY-15] - 7/20/2005

Do not let any more Senators or Representatives sign on to this bill !!

Please go to the CFA website and TAKE ACTION. All the contact information
is there. Points to make are in the various CFA Alerts and in the CFA
letter to the Agriculture Subcommittee on Research, Nutrition and General
Legislation. Within this letter is a link to the article by Dr. Susan
Little, DVM, on feline reproductive physiology that reinforces our concerns
about why the established thresholds in PAWS are unrealistic for
small/moderate catteries with good breeding programs and genetic diversity.
A cattery with 5 breeding females could very well have to be a USDA licensed
Dealer and forced to comply with federal facility standards.
