Ohio and Utah will have instinct on site. Actually, Ohio and Utah could both do
it all except C course but it is up to the herding chair. They both also have
a great facility near the show site.

I think this is a real shame, too, and a serious mistake. I drove my dog to
Colorado from MN last year just to enter her in the Herding Instinct Test
because it was at the show site. She was not entered in anything else. Once
she finished her championship, we got involved in herding because of that
experience in the Instinct Test at the National. Now, we are ready to compete
for HT. But, I am not going to fly her to Houston, then drive to Dallas, then
drive to Beaumont and back to Houston. No way! And, I'm real disappointed
about that. At the same time, I really want to do the tending and appreciate
the attention given to finding a site where tending could be accommodated.
But, if it's so inconvenient to get to and from....Well, I'm sure there will be
plenty of people who will enter. I just won't be one of them. It's just too
much travel time for me. If I was going just for herding, it would be fine. I
would just go to
Dallas and go home. I hope we don't make this mistake again in the future.

I understand and appreciate all of the hard work that goes in to choosing a
site for our national.
We all know that there is NO "perfect" place. But I think a site needs to
be chosen that is CLOSEST to "perfect" that we can get while realizing that in
some things we will have to compromise. The point is that we shouldn't
compromise in the majority of things. AND, with each compromise, the site
needs
to have benefits that will greatly outweigh the drawbacks and make it worth
the compromises.
There are some things, though, that I think are "non-negotiable" as a club
with the most versatile breed. Instinct testing should ALWAYS be available on
the show site. Working Dog Sport, Herding & Tracking should be as close as
possible to the showsite, under an hour is preferable...the further these are
from the showsite, the more the showsite should go down in "rankings".
Obedience & Rally should be onsite. Agility should be indoors on dirt, grass,
or
indoor soccer "turf"...NOT mats over concrete and definitely not outdoors
without cover.
As I was typing this, someone forwarded me the Premium....it says that there
will be no Instinct Testing at Beamont. That is a real shame. According to
Nanci's column in the September Review, there were to be 2 trials with 2
different judges which would enable people to earn the AKC HIC certificate in
one day. Even if we just did the one test like we have in the past, MANY MANY
people enjoy participating in or just observing the instinct testing and it
encourages people to try herding. I know of many "show" dogs that have gone
on to herding because of the Instinct test that they did at the national.
What a shame not to have this event at all this year! I wasn't going to
participate - the only dog I'm taking is actually working on his Herding
Intermediate title...so *I* personally am not inconvenienced, I just hate to
see the
national not have instinct testing at the showsite.
Does anyone know WHY the Instinct testing was cancelled?
