You know what I do now??  I used to offer s/n rebates, but now I offer a $50 
rebate if they take their puppy to a socialization class prior to 6 months of 
age.  This has worked wonders!  The lectures at the kitchen table about 
socializing and training always fall on deaf ears it seems, as well as end up 
low on the priority list with everyone's busy schedules.  I have had quite a 
few people send me the receipt for classes and have heard back from VERY few 
people about temperament issues.  This had been my biggest issue with puppy 
buyers for years, until I started this.  You get the phone call about how the 
dog is aggressive or shy at about 1 yr or so.  Then you ask 
what training/socializing they've done with their puppy and it's ALWAYS the 
same crap!  We were too busy to take him to class.  Too frustrating!!

We have found that our rare "problem" owners pop up when the puppy is 
maturing. No longer the cute (is anything cuter than a GSD puppy?) little 
guy but a large dog that they didn't quite get around to obedience training 
and now shows problems. No amount of screening we have tried has prevented 
this very occasional problem.
But maybe things were meant to work out because so far (knock on wood) the 
alternate homes we have found for these guys have been great.
