This is the definition from the AKC "Rules Applying to Dog Shows"  booklet
 
 
Grand Championship  Points 
The points toward a Grand Championship will be awarded to eligible  dogs 
that place Best Of Breed, Best Of Opposite, Select Dog and Select Bitch based 
on the number of dogs and bitches competing in that  breed or variety. 
Eligible dogs are Champions entered in or transferred to  Best 
of Breed/Variety and Champions that compete for Best of  Breed/Variety by 
virtue of placing first in non-regular single entry classes.  Dogs awarded 
Best of Breed/Variety count all dogs of both sexes competing  in Best of 
Breed/Variety and all dogs of both sexes competing in the regular classes. Dogs 
awarded Best of Opposite Sex count all dogs of their  sex competing in Best 
of Breed/Variety and all dogs of their sex that competed  in the regular 
classes. Dogs awarded Select count dogs of their sex defeated in  Best of 
Breed/Variety and dogs of their sex competing in the regular classes. In 
counting 
the number of dogs in  competition, a dog that is disqualified, or that is 
dismissed, excused or ordered  from the ring by the judge, or from which all 
awards are withheld shall not be included. The entry of non-regular classes 
are not counted for  computation of Grand Champion points to be awarded. Any 
Champion which shall  have won twenty-five points shall become a Grand 
Champion of Record if nine or  more of said points shall have been won at three 
different shows with a rating  of three or more Grand Championship points 
each and under three different judges and some  one or more of the balance of 
said points shall have been won under some other  judge or judges than the 
three referred to above and at least one Champion of  Record was defeated at 
three shows.
