Unfortunately you are the mercy of whatever person is at the counter. Case in
point last year, flew from ATL to Newark no issue with the dog in a 500 crate (
I had 2 shepherds, one wheaten, one kerry and one norfolk). Person at the
counter in ATL was fine, explained that the shepherds ears were erect but he
could comfortably lie down, turn around and the like.. No issue in ATL...
Coming home? A HELLISH NIGHTMARE. Kerry was fine in the 300 crate, Wheaten was
fine in the 300 crate, Yankee was fine in his 100 crate, (and its too small for
him but he was on the plane under the seat). The Delta person in Newark would
NOT let the two shepherds on the flight because the crate was too small. (They
were both in 500s). I ended up having to SHIP the dogs in two brand new 700
crates back to ATL. I even threw a "princess fit" and had them call ATL. The
dog was perfectly fine to fly on wednesday, but wasnt fine on Monday in the
same crate..what gives? Its the ears. if the ears can touch the crate, they say
its TOO SMALL.

Now, I always go in a much larger crate than I need and I keep an "what if"
broken down in the Van.

Cargo is just the Dept. where the animals are shipped.......they all go in with
Cargo in the plane unless
they are a 'pocket puppy'........? I can't see DEXTER fitting under ANY
seat..........
<G>
Either way......at this point in time Continental is the only Airline that I
know of that makes you pay
FULL price for the dog to fly WITH you. All the others fly them as excess
baggage WITH you.
IF you ship the dog alone.....you take it to Cargo and pay a bigger price. IF
the dog flies with you
it goes through theTerminal with you you and priced as excess baggage. ( except
Continental )
The area has nothing to do with the price. With you...excess baggage.
Alone...by the weight & size.
Typically price is anywhere from $100. to $250 as per that airline's excess
baggage fees.
Flying the dog alone.....upward of $400 and $500......which is what Continental
charges no matter what.
We have flown with some big dogs and never had to use a # 700 crate yet.

Anyone fly with a dog recently? I can get a direct flight both ways to Salt
Lake. I'm planning on bringing
a very large dog. Their website says if the dog is in a 700. they have to go
cargo? If I put this dog in a 500
are they going to refuse?? I know a lot depends on who is behind the counter.
haven't flown with a dog on Delta for a number of years. I have been using
United.. TIA Susie

We flew two dogs last week, one in a 400 and one in a 200, fully expecting to
get some issues with the 400
crate........not only did we not have any problems, the staff at American
Airlines went out of their way to make
sure we knew the dogs were ok, boarded, happy, etc. There was a family
traveling with two Giant Schnauzers
in 500 crates, they got exactly the same treatment we did. It was such a good
experience, I wrote to AA to let
them know how happy we were.
All four dogs were checked in as excess baggage, not cargo. But we made sure to
be there extra early.

Hope this helps.
