What a memory lane this is.
My first time in the ring was 1970 (when I was 6 years old), I took one of
Mom's mini-long Dachshunds in the ring. The judge was a great all-arounder
by the name of Thomas Quilley.
I remember going through the motions of trying to stack this stubborn little
so-and-so, and then going around the ring. The next thing I remember was Mr.
Quilley's big hand on my forehead stopping me in my tracks. I had made it
all the way around the ring, following the rubber matting like a good little
boy, but I forgot to stop (or look up, for that matter). I remember him
saying something along the lines of "slow up there little man".
Mr. Quilley always gave Junior Handlers a Canadian Dollar bill when he
handed out the ribbons...with that, and a smile I remember coming out the
ring thinking I was on top of the world.
I don't think Mom gave me another dog to show for a year or two <G>, but as
soon as she thought I was old enough to show one of her German Shepherd Dogs
(10 or 11 yrs old, I think) I was hooked on our beautiful herding breed!

in Ottawa, Canada
I handled for my father a beautiful Sel.Ch. Falco of Thunder Rock son. His
name was Huckster ( breeder my father). I was 15 years old. My father
decided on that day that it was the right time for me to go in the ring. It
was a supported entries for GSD. Judge Percy Doane ( a Canadian specialist
for GSD.He was the owner of Ch. Britmere's Timothy of Lahngold). We were
about 12 dogs in the open class.There was 2 American Champions in the class:
Ch. Valor of Cosalta with the owner Harold Marcus and Ch. Bee-jay's Gentle
Ben owned by Betty Irwin. I got WD and BW. Valor got RW.
The day after was the GSDC of Ottawa specialty. Judge Connie Beckhard.
Mostly same dogs in the ring. Again I went WD and BW with my Falco
son....Connie finished him on that day with a big 5 points. Valor got RW
again....The BOB went to a beautiful "German dog" owned by my friend Paul
Hudson from Toronto.
It was my beginning in the ring as a handler....but never did it as a pro
but finished more than 100 Champions in Canada, multiple selects, group
wins, BISS in Canada and some US Champions and a GV in Canada in 1981....
