[ SHOWGSD-L ] First day at work

Yesterday I did my first real day working for Guide Dogs of America.  There 
were no pups in residence, except the 2wk old babies, so I got to play vet 
tech.  We did hip/elbow x-rays on some potential breeding prospects.  Then, we 
did a couple AI's.  They do no natural breedings.  I did follow up care on all 
the dogs.  I did get to work a bit with the trainers so I would know what to 
look for in the pups.  It is very different from what JQP, performance and show 
people want from their dogs.  

At lunch, we all had a big debate on GSD's.  The GSD guy, who loves American 
show lines, wants German working dogs in the program.  He feels American dogs 
are too soft.  Others feel German dogs are too much dog for the average Joe.  
The angulation of the American show lines is believed to garner more questions 
than a blind person can answer, as they can't even see the dog and would be a 
distraction.  I understand both sides of the issue.  I kept my mouth shut other 
than to say that health and temperament need to be the main focus.

I personally have German working lines and American show lines and crosses.  I 
think the crosses would be the best option.  They need moderate dogs that bond 
well and protect their owners as well as dogs with a strong work ethic.  This 
is going to be interesting.

Tomorrow, I get to meet all the puppy raisers for the monthly training class.  
Next week, I get to play in the nursery and start working with the babies.
