Hi everyone,
Ridgewood has proposed to raise the town's Dangerous Dog licensing fee to $700.
Under the state statue, that is the maximum they can increase it to. After some
research, we learned that many towns in New Jersey already have this fee in
place. When Ridgewood announced why this change in ordinance was being pursued,
they made several mistakes in their explanation. Stating part of the reason was
to cover monthly inspections, which by law, they can not charge for and another
was that it might protect them from liability when issuing a dangerous dog
license. At the town council meeting, I informed them that they could not
charge for inspections as they stated, argued that raising the licensing fee
would not prevent dangerous dogs and that it would not protect the town from
liability.
I stated the process of eliminating dangerous dogs or avoiding developing one
begins with education. Owners can have a wonderful dog that goes bad due to
circumstances, whether it be training, or lack of training, not understanding
types of circumstances to not put the dog into or even possibly health issues.
Given the opportunity, most people are open to learning how to prevent or stop
a problem. As a town resident and someone with a lengthy dog resume, I would
like to offer a way to begin the process. A simple committee called Responsible
Pet Ownership Committee. The committee, made up of residents/individuals/town
representatives, which will be involved in assisting the town in both educating
the public and improving the living conditions of both pets and humans within
the town.The Committee would make recommendations to improve pet related issues
in the town and assist residents with pet related issues.
This committee would require no funding from the town. The American Kennel Club
as already announced support for such a program and with its affiliates, will
supply all the speakers, material and even insurance for any events held. The
only thing the town would need to supply is classroom space and some outdoor
space during the warmer months. This would be the opportunity to not only
educate the residents on town ordinances already in place, but how they can
prevent problems from developing with their pets.
We need your support. The town Council will be voting on the ordinance on
February 13th. The floor is open to the public for comments. We need people to
step up and encourage the town to establish this Committee. The increase in
Dangerous Dog licensing may pass just based on the fact that it is permitted,
but to establish this committee would assist us in all aspects of future town
issues and gives us the opportunity to reach and educate the general public.
The meeting will be held a Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., Village
Hall, 131 Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450
