A bill is in hearing in Massachusetts to ban pet rental companies. I knew they practice this in Japan but didn't know until yesterday that there is a company operating in CA (probably in LA county) called FlexPetz, and trying to open up in Mass, likely in Boston proper for now. Here is the status: If you're in Mass., pls CALL the committee chairs' offices (see #s below) if you can't attend the hearing on Thursday/. For everyone else, be alert that this company or others might be coming to your state soon. When I think of the poor dogs who will be in a continuous state of insecurity, never bonded to a human, not to mention how the renters might treat them, I can only think that they will all lead short, unhappy lives. Subject: Please Act Now to Keep Rent-a-Pet Companies Out of Mass. Please read, act, crosspost, circulate. There's been movement in the state bill to keep a new form of animal exploitation from coming to Massachusetts this summer. For those who don't know, FlexPetz rents companion dogs by the hour or day, for people to use and return as if they were cars or DVDs. Not only is this cruel, experts say it would open a Pandora's box of risks to animals and people. "An Act Prohibiting the Renting of Pets" (House Bill 4753) is now before a working committee thanks to all who called reps and senators. It is humane legislation, supported by MSPCA, Animal Rescue League, Buddy Dog Humane Society, Animal Control Officers Assn. of Mass., and many, many more. But don't celebrate yet: FlexPetz has hired one of the most powerful lobbyists in the state, O'Neill and Associates (Tip's son!), to fight it. That means we need to ratchet up our efforts...immediately. Your involvement is critical. Key legislative decisions will be made in June. If the bill doesn't pass by July 31, it will die, opening the door for FlexPetz and its clones. Think: Dave's Discount Dog & Cat Rentals. Pets offered as rental property have less protection and oversight than racing animals. They're on par with those used for fighting. The time to protect them is NOW. Here's how: 1. Most Important: Ask the Chairs of the state?s Joint Committee on Municipalities to ?release An Act Prohibiting the Renting of Pets (House Bill 4753) quickly, with a favorable report.? They are: Sen. Anthony Petruccelli, (617) 722-1634 and Rep. Vincent Pedone, (617) 722-2090. AND Call as many members as possible, especially those who are your legislators. Be sure to say you?re a constituent, because constituents rule! Find committee members at: http://www.mass.gov/legis/comm/j10.htm Find your legislators at: www.wheredoivotema.com/bal/myelectioninfo.php 2. Attend the State House hearing on June 5, 11-1. Please make every effort. We need to pack the hall, to show legislators we mean business. FlexPetz has deep pockets, an aggressive PR machine and Tom O'Neill. We have something even more powerful: our vote. 3. Ask your own legislators to support the bill even if they don't sit on the Joint Committee. After the bill is released from committee, it will go before the entire Legislature for a vote; both steps need to happen quickly and successfully. 4. Boston residents have extra clout. If you live there, also ask your City Councilor to ?pass the home rule petition prohibiting the renting of pets in Boston (Docket 0611).? Don't live there? Tell an animal lover who does. Find your Councilor at: http://www.cityofboston.gov/CITYCOUNCIL/ 5. Crosspost or print and circulate this: Urge everyone you know to contact legislators. We're fighting an uphill battle.
