I agree, however, it is all well and good. But you can also be wrong with
that. I f.i. have a dog who is a champion and also has his CD. Never thought
of getting him advertised for stud. I loved his coloring, still do, He has a
beautiful coat and that black and red that one likes. Has a good pedigree
too. So, I get this bitch and since I wanted that rich pigment in the pups
which the bitch did not have I decided to breed those two. Guess what? I did
not get a single one of the 8 pups with his pigment, not a single one! I
still can't believe he did not produce this in his progeny. He was bred once
before to another bitch, there were pups but I have never seen them. So,
what I am saying is that it is possible you don't really get what you think
the stud has to offer..and he was NEVER dyed. This great pigment came from
his grand dam, a Andretti daughter.

Ok, that was going to my second point. Doing your homework. Let's say I
have a bitch I want to breed. I know her strengths/weaknesses and want to
improve on them with a suitable stud. I can't attend the Nationals that
year so I am depending on the results of the Nationals to find, not only the
consumate show dog (GV or select) but a dog that compliments my bitch and
improves my lines. I read the Reviews, look at the Ads and see the
accomplishments of these animals. However, these dog may live 2,000 miles
from where I live. Chances are, I have not seen him in person nor any of
his progeny. I haven't seen any baby pups from him to see pigment,
temperament or anything. But, he is the Dog of the day and everyone is
breeding to him. This is how most do their homework. Yes, I am guilty too.
Not anymore. In addition to my obsession with health issues, I also want to
see some results of what I am breeding to, in person. I want to see litters
from said stud dogs before those pups are in the ring. The GV or select is
not good enough for me unless I can meet the dog and see what he has
produced. There are some big time dogs out there that I have met in person
and would NEVER breed to. They are trained to perform in the ring but are
devil dogs in person. I have to live with what I produce and most of my
pups go to pet homes. I can't afford to do anything less than finding the
right match. I will no longer breed to a dog just for a major WIN at the
Nationals. I want to know about his longevity, his progeny and long term
health issues. That is real homework. Oh, and when you get to meet the
pups and young dogs produced, you will see the pigment and know if it is
there or not. JMHO

Excellent tells you who are OFA'd and who May Not be...
When you choose a stud dog it is your responsibility to make sure that dog
has the things that, 1. your bitch needs and 2. health checks you
require....
