God bless and protect each and every marine, and service person who have put their lives on line for our great country. And the dogs, too! Thank you, Jane, for this birthday message. Pat Castle Kennels, LTD. Where Shepherds of Distinction Reign www.castlekennels.com -----Original Message----- From: showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jane Kerner Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 10:32 AM To: SegerWind@xxxxxxx Cc: David Fritsche; Rachel Anderson; The List Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Devil Dogs Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps..... and to all the men, women, and German Shepherd Dogs serving Corps and Country. The Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Marines on 10 November 1775. President of the Continental Congress, John Hancock, appointed Captain Samuel Nichols first Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Captain Nichols immediately went to Tun Tavern in Philadelphia to recruit men to serve in the finest Corps of fighting men in the world, dedicated to courage, honor, and country. The men and women of the Corps have served this nation through the years, celebrating at a Birthday Ball on every 10 November. Marines all over the world hold a "Birthday Ball" event. A place is set at one of the festive dinner tables which always remains empty.........in memory of the Marines who have served and fallen in service to Corps and Country. The Marines stand and toast the empty place with glasses raised. All Marines know, of course, that the Marine Hymn tells us that the Marines guard the streets of Heaven. Marines are sometimes known as Devil Dogs, "Teufel hunden", a name which was given them by the Germans who fought Marines at Belleau Wood in France 1-26 June 1918. Marines, the best fighting force on planet earth, of course, also train and serve with German Shepherd Dogs, the best breed of dog on planet earth. Marines, a Corps of the honorable and brave, are also known for their wit......... Such as: "Remember, Marines, after the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is not your friend." Marines say "Ooorah" a lot........... They also speak Latin. Always Faithful. Semper Fidelis, Marines...... And Happy Birthday.
