The team of Petra Ford and her fabulous Lab, Tyler, won the Obedience
competition at Crufts. Hooray for a breathtaking performance. Petra had to
totally retrain her boy for this competition. Totally different than our
Obedience venue.
Congratulations Petra and Tyler from the USA. Here is a video of some of their
performance.

Spine issues and OFA Hips are totally unrelated.  IS this her diagnosis, has
she been xrayed?  How long has she had this issue?  According to this site,
it DM CAN occur in younger dogs, a simple blood test can confirm, normal age is
between 4-14.

Has anyone ever heard of Spinal Myelopathy in young dogs, e.g. 2 and 1/2
years?  I have friends who have a 2 1/2 year old shepherd who is showing the
signs and they are baffled.  The dog is a female and  otherwise fine, but has
been wobbley on her back end.  The typical walk, walk, flop over to one side
that we know.  Any comments?  Both parents are OFA certified and so are
grandparents for several generations??? Claire DrosdickAvion Kennels

Is she anywhere near where there could be raccoons????  There is  something
called "coon fever" that mimics neurological symptoms and comes on  very
suddenly. (Unlike DM). Apparently dogs pick up a virus from  racoon urine and
it affects their nervous system.  Very difficult to  diagnose, supportive
care.

Subject: Grants Promote Pet-People Bonds

In case anyone knows a group that could apply...

Banfield Charitable Trust
The Banfield Charitable Trust provides grants to nonprofit organizations
nationwide that keep pets and their people together. Through the Pet Advocacy
Grants program, the Trust provides funding to organizations whose programs
provide a direct solution to avoid surrender or separation of companion pets
from families. Funding priorities include the following: basic veterinary care
for financially-challenged companion pet owners; programs that help the
homeless, seriously ill, homebound, or disabled care for their pets; companion
pet food banks; education programs that directly relate to keeping companion
pets and their people together; behavior modification programs to correct
inappropriate behaviors so that pets may remain in the home; and disaster
preparedness and response. Grants range from $1,000 to $20,000. Requests are
reviewed quarterly; the upcoming application deadline is April 30, 2012. Visit
the Trusts website to download the application
 guidelines and forms.

There was a good article in the Review a month or so back. That itself is
enough to join the Parent Club, and get the Review. It talked about
treatment,  and also outlined the dangers of breeding without the DM test. We
would
not  breed without it.

It also talked about how often DM is misdiagnosed and how seldom it shows
up in young dogs.  In the past the diagnosis was made when nothing else was
found to explain the problems.  That may well be still being done.
