Ed repeats what has been repeated. I haven't shown at the Nationals for
three years now, because I won't and can't drive three hours each way.
Kirk was shown because Cappy and Gloria drove him to the National. He hates to
ride in a car, and it showed. I won't fly a dog because of not only the
outrageous cost, but the stress on the dog, and the worry to me as to if the
dog will get there safely.
So, if the parent club keeps using any location beyond a days drive, they
do so without me. That goes for those in the East, who won't fly/drive over
1,000 miles. So, things change.
It isn't the end of the shows,it is just a different way to show. It is
different now than it was 20 years ago, and looking at the Grand Victors 30
years ago, I am pleased to see the change. Thank you Linda for posting
those pictures. The old ways aren't always better.
I can have great fun showing in local shows. At the last three local shows
it was a small entry, two points each show. Kierk won all three shows for
six points. It is just as much fun as flying to Iowa to win five points.
It is just different, not worse, not better. Everything changes. Embrace
the difference.

I'm at the age where I just can't ( won't) spend ten hours in a car
driving to a dog show, and I refuse to fly an adult dog anywhere for any

Not only is it expensive, it's all the other BS you go through flying
dogs.... Why must a dog be at the cargo center 3 ( cuss word ending in ing)
before the flight! The dog is the last thing on board, if the flight is 8
hours the dog is in the crate minimum 11 hours, the cost is crazy. I've blown
my top at least 3 or 4 times at the airport flying dogs, one time I thought I
was going to jail ( not proud of that incident) but like Popeye used to
say " that's all I can stand cuz I can't stand no more". No more flying dogs
for me, and there are some up coming shows that I would love to
participate, but unless I get a driver for my bitch, we ain't going... Call me
Sisyphus! His life fits mine to a tee Some days ya just don't want to go
outside. Ed

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] High cost of staying........
Regarding some of the conversation earlier this morning about how small
the shows are and
how this List seems to be shrinking along with the shows..... I can
certainly understand why.
We just shipped a one year old GSD puppy to a main hub airport.....a short
direct flight from
Sacramento, Calif. The airline wouldn't even talk to us without a #
700 crate....at the going
rate of $902.00 for a 3 hr. direct flight for an 80 lb.
dog.........because his ears stand up!!
NO WONDER many are dropping out of this sport. IF it was one of the two
nice 4 1/2 month
old pups I have right now that had to ship out on the same direct flight I
would have to use a
# 500 crate.. because their ears are up... for $602.62!! for a 4 1/2
month old _ puppy?!.....And
THAT is just the air flight..not counting buying the crate and Health
Certificate. Ridiculous!!
What is a buyer to do? What is a breeder/ exhibitor to do?? Can't
keep and show them all, yet
can't sell them out of the area without adding another $1,000 to the basic
price for shipping.....or
dropping the price to pet prices.
Bottom line....we are getting "driven out" or "flown" out of this Sport.
For ourselves.....and buyers.
You can't afford to utilize the airlines to ship your dog because of the
ridiculous request for ears not
touching the top of the crate.....and that leaves us driving for DAYS to a
National. Easier to just not
go until they become more centralized for all of us.
THAT'S NO FUN! It does seem easier to quit than to beat our heads
against the brick wall.......
