Here at 4 Paws we never breed a female past 5 years of age. In the past we did
breed some a bit later and saw more complications with pregnancy, smaller
litters, and more health problems in the Mom and puppies.

We follow the guidelines set forth by Lee Duncan and retire females at age 5
years. Duncan told my Grandmother that old females had old eggs and that set
the stage for issues with the puppies.

Depending on the health and how well the bitch has bounced back from the other
pregnancies and if the deliveries were uncomplicated then I would say 7 and 8
the latest.

Assuming good health and 2-3 prior pregnancies, at what age do you feel a bitch
is too old to breed? Thanks for your input.
