Wouldn't that would be possible if both the sire and the dam had 1 color 
marker for sable and 1 for b/t (black and tan)?  Actually, (statistically) 
there should be 25% of the litter who were b/t.

As I understand dog genetics, both the sire and the dam carry 2 color 
markers (plus the "saturation" marker for the extent of the b/t or sable). 
A sable may have either 2 sable color markers or 1 sable color marker with 
another color marker such as b/t (or black, etc.).  If one sable parent 
carries 2 sable markers and the other parent carries 1 sable marker and 1 
b/t marker, you should always get sable puppies, regardless of the non-sable 
color marker carried by the other parent.  However, some of the puppies 
should have only 1 sable marker with the b/t recessive behind it, so you 
could get b/t puppies from an offspring bred to a b/t.
