I think it is inexcusably cruel to alter a male cat and release him into an
outdoor feral colony. Altering at any age can cause problems in male cats but
the largest is a blocked urethra due to a change in urine ph. Altered cats
should be watched like a hawk!!!!! If you've ever handled a blocked male you
know exactly what I'm talking about. For those of you who've never worked for
a vet it goes something like this. Male cat [neutered] gets kidney stones.
The stones, which look and feel like sand, block the tube from the bladder to
the outside world. IF HE'S LUCKY, Cat is presented to the vet with a bladder
swelled up to the size of a soft ball. [Just imagine not being able to urinate
for a week or more.......] These guys are in incredible pain, shocky, and
suffering from uremic poisoning. FAST clearing of the stones SOMETIMES saves
their life. Many times not. If they do survive they usually have permanent
damage to the urethra resulting in surgical correction. IF
UNTRE
ATED the bladder will rupture. [Just think about that one......] Feral males
are better off humanely euthanized than to be left to die like that!!!
Every time some rescuer brags about how many males they've put back into feral
colonies never to be monotored again it makes me sick!
