I find it interesting the talk about horses and colic. I had horses for many years, starting when I was 14. I showed in 4-H and in my early 20's was actively involved in endurance riding with my arabians. What I find interesting is the thought that diet and stress caused colic, along with the same train of thought for bloat in dogs (some of the first "causes" were diet and activity after eating) When I was conditioning and racing my horse I would catch my horse (they were in mountain pastures) and feed him his grain, saddle him and ride him immediately after feeding. On endurance races the horses were fed before the race and given water at every opportunity during the race. These are horses that are trotting and galloping nearly the whole race, incredible atheletes. Not once during that time did I have a horse colic, nor did I ever seen another horse colic at one of these races. I did experience colic with horses before I started racing, with my horses that were in a co rral and only ridden periodically. With my dogs, I don't withold water from them after activity, and routinely feed them directly after exercise. I have only had one torsion, with my old 13 year old dog who was very inactive. I worry about bloat and torsion, but we can't treat these dogs like porcelain. I do believe there is a genetic link, whether that link is simply body type that is condusive to this terrible event or another weakness in ligimation supporting the stomach and spleen. Sometimes things just happen without any explanation. Sheri Chambers Paravel German Shepherds ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
