[ SHOWGSD-L ] Bitch won't clean her newborn pups

Need the list's collective knowledge.
A friends bitch whelped 8 pups yesterday.
Mom doesn't want to stay in box to nurse them - will, if made to lie down and 
is supervised.
Mom will not clean pups or stimulate them to do pees and poops.
This was not a c-section but bitch is a first time mom.

Any suggestions to deal with these issues?
