[ SHOWGSD-L ] BBE Not for the meek

As an active exhibitor in the Bred-by class, I have been reading the current
thread about how easily dogs from the BBE class are overlooked. All I can say
(as the holder of 2 of the treasured golden AKC medallions - CH TerraNorte -
Windwalker's Movado and CH TerraNorte's Affair O'The Heart) is that showing in
this class is not for the meek or the inconsistent. Finishing a dog from the
bred-by class is tough. You have to be prepared for it to take months of
consistent showing to finish a good dog.
Why - 2 reasons. First, I think that judges are drawn to the entries in the
AmBred and Open classes that have more competition. Surely (read in sarcasm) if
a dog is thought to be the best dog in a class of 10 dogs - that dog is better
than the one who won the bred-by defeating 1 or 2 dogs. Second, in most cases
the handler in the BBE class is you or I - the weekend warrior that steps in
the ring maybe 1 weekend a month during the heat of the season. The handlers
that are showing the dogs in the Ambred and Open classes are the pros that are
in the ring several times a day each and every weekend showing dogs. They will
be better at presenting their client's dogs because they have to be - they work
at it.
That said - the average owner/handler can finish a dog from the bred-by class,
but you have to be thick skinned, and every bit the mercenary that the
professionals project. You will almost always be behind 2 dogs with polish and
drive that are looking for their owners outside the ring - that the judge looks
at first.
It can be done and is everyday.
