Azeri was more than a promising filly. She was horse of the year for 2002---only the third of her sex ever to win that award in the 32 years it had been given out at the time. Her original owner was also someone associated with oil overseas (Allen Paulson)--he named her. Unfortunately, he passed away before she ever started her racing career. At the time she was named Horse of the Year, Azeri was considered to be the best racehorse in America, possibly in the world. Her nickname in the stable was Honeybear...because she was so docile and sweet. 2002 was her first full year of racing...she won 8 out of 9 races, including her Breeders' Cup race...and her total prize money for the year was over $2 million. Great story...great filly...and possibly, a great bitch here, in the Select 2 spot! Peggy Judith Hale wrote: >Sometimes people ask me what Annie's registered name means.
