The Beginnings of the White Swiss Shepherd Dog
The White Swiss Shepherd Dog is very closely related to the German
Shepherd. It is a fact that a white herding dog named Horand von Grafrath, was
the
grandfather of the German Shepherd. This German Shepherd is acknowledged
as the dog to which all modern day German Shepherd bloodlines can be traced
back to. From the beginning of both breed histories they have been very
closely linked.

In the early 20th century, the German Shepherd was bred specifically for
the colour of the breed we see today. During this breeding programme
occasional white coated puppies were born as the recessive gene was passed
down
through the generations.

The Unwanted Coat Colour and the Change in Fashion

The white coated German Shepherd was not desired and, in 1933, the parent
German Shepherd Club described the white coat as a defect. After the Second
World War, more German Shepherd clubs around the world accepted the
standard of the parent club. As a result, breed club members were no longer
allowed to breed dogs with the recessive white-coat gene. Indeed, many dog
shows
around the world, if not all, barred German Shepherds with white coats from
 entering the events.

In the 1970s, admirers of the white-coated variety formed their own White
German Shepherd Dog clubs to promote breeding of the recessive gene. In
Switzerland, the breed was adopted very quickly and it was the first country
to recognise it as a separate breed; as a result, this breed has become
known as the White Swiss Shepherd Dog.

In actual fact, many countries now breed the White Swiss Shepherd Dog and
call it by their own name, even though they are the same dog. The days of
people not admitting the White Swiss Shepherd Dog into dog shows have gone
and the breed's numbers continue to rise. A sought after breed, the White
Swiss Shepherd Dog is loved for its working ability and by families for its
affectionate temperament.
