Maybe all we need to do to clear up any confusion is to refine the definition
of amateur to include the word novice (see definition below). Note the
definition of amateur can also be "inexperienced" (definition 3 under amateur).
Would that clear up any confusion or concerns?
Novice: a person who is new to the circumstances, work, etc., in which he or
she is placed; beginner; tyro: a novice in politics.
Amateur
1. a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure
rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons. Compare
PROFESSIONAL.
2. an athlete who has never competed for payment or for a monetary prize.
3. a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity: Hunting lions
is not for amateurs.

Amy, I am not on the committee anymore, BUT I thought the rules for the
amateur even stated "accepted money or compensation for one year prior or
had a rate card" something of that nature. The new AKC amateur class states
" have a rate card, accepted money, compensation or promoted yourself as a
professional handler" much more strict. Christine
