The vet came out this afternoon - decided against vaccines right now b/c of the
diarrhea situation, wormed them instead and gave me Albon to give them for the
next 10 days - she suspected coccidia (sp!). Well, all was well until about
7:30 tonight - came home from a meeting and went to look in the run....first
thought was, when did I give you guys rope toys to play with.....??!! Suffice
it to say that I won't be eating spaghetti for a REALLY LONG TIME!! This
first-time litter stuff is sure interesting....
The vet wants to do a 3-day cycle of treatment for the worms, including my four
adult dogs, and then a one-day treatment 2 weeks later for everyone. Prior to
her worming them, she didn't think that was going to be much of an issue
because the puppies looked so healthy and were so active and lively, so she was
kind of surprised there were so many worms in the stools. The vet also
recommended that I check with my doctor to see if *I* should be treated as
well. She said that I needed to clean everything I could with a 10% bleach
solution, and what I couldn't clean I should throw, and also that I needed to
pick up the dog stools in the yard (which I do anyway except for the occasional
piece that looks like a leaf or is hiding) after worming everyone and spray the
grass with the bleach solution as well. Does anyone have any experience with
this? I don't recall seeing much on the list about treating for worms this
extensively, as in bleaching the yard and etc., but then before now I wasn't
exactly looking - what else do I need to do??
Everyone is eating (solid, dry puppy food) and drinking well tonight, and I
have already seen actual "turds" instead of the cow pies. Thanks to everyone
who has been so helpful during all of this - next litter I will sure know what
to look for and what to do differently!!
