My herding instructor offers 4 hour blocks in which 4 people rotate with their
dogs over a four hour period. We usually get in 4 runs a piece plus we get to
watch other dogs work and train which is a great learning experience. It also
makes the drive seem more worthwhile and they even cook lunch for us. :o)

The REAL truth is that I love the actual TRAINING more than watching them
Trial. It is more motivating
and interesting for them and they are so pleased with themselves and proud as
they get the chance to
do what they already know deep in their gene pool as they are encouraged to
follow their instinct and
listen to the trainer at the same time.
At the actual Trial your dog is in the arena for a limited amount of time and
it is controlled with A.K.C.
requirements. Training is well worth the drive if you can find a place to
take them.
We have to drive for three hours one way up over the mountains and into Nevada
for two 10 minute
( at best ) lessons....so the dog must have the talent and drive to get it done
reasonably quickly.
But those sessions are the real backbone of learning about Herding and seeing
your dog learn and how
proud they are when they KNOW they've "done good"...... They are so
satisfied and pleased with
themselves and YOU are so pleased to see them do what they know they were bred
for.
Oh yes.........for sure........ beware of ATH......highly contagious!! <G>

Traveling 2-3 hours to get to a herding facility is about routine for most of
us. Many people end up making a herding weekend out of it and doing it once a
month instead of weekly. Others train by attending herding camps for a week. Or
by attending clinics. Of course some then end up with sheep of their own ...
Herding weekends are a wonderful way to learn herding - not just the time
your dog is working, but sharing experiences, learning from others - it is like
an immersion program for leaning languages, and the dogs love it. Word of
warning - ATH spreads like wildfire at these events.

Congratulations!! I wish we had someone closer than 3 hours away with sheep
and training. I know what you mean, when TBoy got his herding instinct
certificate I had chill bumps. It was amazing --- he had never even seen
sheep before and after about 30 seconds of looking at them he went to work.

The other day Ruth Scheubler posted information about the Herding Trial in
Springfield and mentioned
my name along with Mary Ellen Kish and Ann Schultz and a few others involved
in herding.

Once you see your dog herd sheep you will fall in love with this Breed all
over again.
I got to feed my addiction this weekend at the DVGSDC, Inc. Herding Trial.<G>
Today ....our Grand Victrix Select Excellent Champion Mar Haven's BlackOrchid
earned her H.T.
just a few months after her litter and no real time for much work......with
sheer joy on her face and
utilizing her incredible stride for something other than a "bigcircle"....<G>
( we think she'll be back to try for her P.T. after watching her work )
Also.....
Today.....our Champion Mar Haven's Last Cowboy Song earned his P.T.
This dog is extremely talented at herding and an extremely 'biddable'
dog......willing to do as
told to work with the sheep. A real natural and beautiful to watch!!
We THANK Terri Jones for her help in getting both dogs ready for this Trial
after the decision was
made a couple of weeks ago. Typically Sandy Moore will train COWBOY but
is recovering from
surgery and Terri stepped in and did a beautiful job with both. THANK YOU
TERRI!!
