AKC/EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPDRAWS RECORD-BREAKING ENTRY
=97 Thousands of Top Dogs Descend on Tampa =97
NEW YORK (Dec. 29, 2004) =96 The American Kennel Club and The Iams=20
Company announced today a total of 2,451 entries were received for the=20=
2005 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on January 15 and 16 in Tampa,=20=
Fla. The event will be simulcast live on Animal Planet and the=20
Discovery Channel, starting at 8 p.m. (EST) both nights.
=93Given the select nature of an invitation-only event for top-ranked=20=
dogs, we are delighted that our total entry increased by nearly 1,000=20
dogs this year- =96 a more than 50 percent increase over 2003,=94 said =

Menaker, Show Chairman. =93In addition to having our largest entry ever,=20=
we are proud to have all 165 AKC breeds and varieties from all 50=20
states and 17 foreign countries including Thailand, Finland, Peru and=20
the United Kingdom. This truly international competition gives the=20
public a unique opportunity to experience the best in the world of=20
purebred dogs.=94
Invitations for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship were extended=20=
to the top 25 dogs in every AKC-recognized breed and variety, every=20
all-breed Best in Show winning dog in America from the qualifying=20
period of October 8, 2003 to October 5, 2004, and select dogs from=20
recognized foreign registries. Newly invited this year were all dogs=20
completing their AKC championship requirements, with all points earned=20=
from the Bred-By-Exhibitor class, during the qualifying period.
Seventy-one Dachshunds (three varieties) lead the entry tally followed=20=
by 33 Chihuahuas (two varieties) and 29 American Staffordshire=20
Terriers. Four breeds =96 the Brittany, the Cocker Spaniel (three=20
varieties), the Poodle (three varieties) and the Havanese =96 each boast=20=
an entry of 27 and the Pug and Bulldog with 26 round out the=20
top-entered breeds at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The three=20=
newly recognized AKC breeds =96 the Black Russian Terrier, the Glen of=20=
Imaal Terrier and the Neapolitan Mastiff =96 bring a total of 32 dogs to=20=
this prestigious event for the first time. Totals by group include=20
Sporting - 353; Hound - 358; Working - 360; Terrier =96 366; Toy - 360;=20=
Non-Sporting =96 292; and Herding - 259.
=93This esteemed event not only continues to draw the top=20
owner/breeder/handlers =96 comprising 40 percent of the total entry =96 =
to=20
vie for Best Bred-By-Exhibitor in Show, but also brings the best and=20
the brightest to our Junior Showmanship competition,=94 Menaker said. =

are thrilled that 103 juniors entered qualified both competitively and=20=
academically. They are proof positive that the future of the sport of=20
purebred dogs looks very promising.=94
For a second year, the AKC National Agility Championship and the AKC=20=
National Obedience Invitational are being held concurrently and at the=20=
same venue. There are 750 dog/handler teams competing in Agility and=20
140 in Obedience, which brings the total combined entry for all three=20
events to 3,341. The AKC National Agility Championship will be=20
televised on Animal Planet at 8 p.m. (EST) on February 8, 2005.
In addition to the competitions, the event features exciting=20
activities for fanciers and families, including AKC Meet The Breeds=20
where fanciers from 141 AKC National Breed Clubs will share their=20
knowledge and love of their chosen breed with informative displays and=20=
canine representatives.
