Yesterday, the Maine House of Representatives passed LD 1885, as amended, which
would expand the state’s loan program to future practitioners of veterinary
medicine.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration, and Maine residents are
strongly encouraged to contact their State Senator today to express support.
Last week, the American Kennel Club (AKC) issued an alert noting that the bill
was in need of your help if it were to be adopted before the end of the Maine
legislative session, April 20.

AKC and the Maine Federation of Dog Clubs recognize the serious shortage of
veterinarians practicing in Maine. The inability to secure veterinary care
when needed negatively impacts the health and welfare of all animals, including
dogs.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: These last days of the legislative session are extremely busy
for lawmakers. Please immediately contact your state senator, even if you did
this last week, and again request that passage of LD 1885, as amended, be
adopted right away and sent to the Governor.
• Identify your state senator’s email by clicking on the first letter
of your town or city here.
• In the subject line write, “Support LD 1885, veterinarian workforce”.
• Share your experience trying to get timely veterinary services in
Maine.
• Be certain to provide your name and address.
