 > The Carolina Kennel Club officially communicated its
 > position to the
 > AKC
 > in early June by e-mail. In order to reiterate the
 > position with the
 > AKC
 > and communicate it to legislators, the following has
 > been sent by mail
 > or fax.

 > Mr. James P. Crowley, Executive Secretary American
 > Kennel Club

 > New York, NY
 > BY REGISTERED MAIL
 > PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO BOARD AND OFFICERS
 > Ladies and Gentlemen:
 > On June seventh of this year, during a regularly
 > scheduled meeting, the
 > membership of the Carolina Kennel Club reviewed
 > proposed PAWS
 > (S1139) legislation and voted without dissent to
 > advise this Board of
 > our opposition to it. Because of the short time frame
 > prior to the next
 > scheduled meeting of the AKC Board, our numerous
 > concerns were
 > expressed
 > to this office through electronic communication.
 > At our next scheduled Board meeting, the issue was
 > briefly revisited
 > and
 > the conclusions of our Board remained consistent with
 > that of the
 > general membership. Most recently, at our August
 > general meeting, PAWS
 > again arose as a matter of discussion, in part, due to
 > the copious
 > correspondence from AKC communications.
 > We feel compelled to advise in this official manner,
 > that the resolve
 > of
 > our membership is such that we could not even get a
 > motion to revisit
 > our original opinion. As a voting Member Club of the
 > AKC, it is with
 > deep regret that we must reject the course of AKC
 > operational
 > management
 > in this matter; *we adamantly oppose PAWS
 > legislation.*
 > We do not believe that this legislation is good for
 > dogs; we do not
 > believe that this course is good for the Sport; and we
 > do not believe
 > its support is in the best interest of the AKC. The
 > discourse, at this
 > point, has become tedious, and we will not continue to
 > belabor it here.
 > Instead, we will respectfully ask but one hypothetical
 > question of this
 > body: *What do you suppose the founders and framers of
 > this great
 > experiment in democracy and individual liberty would
 > have said if
 > agents
 > of the Federal government had appeared at their gates,
 > without notice,
 > and demanded to inspect their pack and their property
 > for no other
 > reason than the number of puppies those dogs had
 > produced that year?*
 > We suspect they would share both our shock and our
 > outrage.
 > Sincerely,
 > Kay Lackey, Corresponding Secretary
 > Carolina Kennel Club, Inc.
 > cc Senator Elizabeth Dole
 > Senator Richard Burr
 > Senator Rick Santorum
 > Senator Saxby Chambliss
 > Senator William Frist, MD
 > President George W. Bush
