Bob Penney's passing saddens me greatly. We had been friends for many years going back to the fifties. I wrote a letter to John DeHope supporting Bob's being elected to the Roll of Honor, which may help to broaden the knowledge of Bob among those who were not fortunate as I was to know him so long. The letter follows: BROON GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS Vivian and Tom Brown 2506 Larchmont, Santa Ana, CA 92706 (714) 547-1484 broonesq@xxxxxxxxxxxx June 13, 2002 Mr. John F. DeHope 116 Wolf-Laurel Lane Hopkins, SC 29061-9424 Dear John, I write in support of enrolling Bob Penney on the Roll of Honor of the GSDCA. Bob has owned German Shepherd Dogs since 1946 when he returned from World War II service in the Army Air Corps and acquired a dog from William G. Steuer, a prominent Southern California breeder of the time. He has been a professional dog handler since 1950 and a member of the GSDCA since 1955, a member of the SV since 1960. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the GSDCA from 1974 to 1980 during which time he chaired the Obedience Committee. Bob has been on the Temperament Committee since 1976 when it was formed and for a number of years has been its chairman. He has been instrumental in the clubâ??s adopting standards of temperament testing for conformation judges. He has worked as a temperament evaluator in all parts of the country and has acted as such at trials held in conjunction with the National Specialty. If in recent years there has been, as many of us believe, an overall improvement in temperament in dogs shown in conformation, we must give a large measure of credit for that improvement to Bob. Bobâ??s handling has been mainly in the Southwest, California, Arizona, Nevada, and he has handled some of the all time winners in this area. He handled Best in Show winner Ch Anna v Graustien, three times West Coast Victrix Ch Ulla of Rocky Reach II, Maturity Victrix, Can Grand Victrix 4 times select Ch Kallendarâ??s Image, and of course, one of the few double Grand Victors, Ch Yoncallaâ??s Mike. He has been a member of the Professional Handlerâ??s Association for more than thirty years. Through the more than a half century that Bob has handled professionally he has demonstrated a fine sense of ethics and fine sportsmanship accepting his losses along with his wins with equanimity. In addition to his conformation handling Bob has for many years conducted obedience classes, has trained many dogs individually for clients and basically works full time training when he is not attending a show. He has been involved in dog club activities as a Board Member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Los Angeles County, as President and various other offices of the Pasadena Kennel Club. During the time that AKC licensed handlers and permitted them to judge specialty shows, Bob was in demand as a judge, having judged such shows as San Joaquin Valley GSDC, Grand Canyon GSDC, San Diego County GSDC, Hawaii and Topline as well as eleven futurities. For more than half a century, Bob has made a positive contribution to the advancement and welfare of the German Shepherd Dog both locally and nationally and is well deserving of a place on the Roll of Honor. Thank you for considering Bob Penney for this honor. Thomas J. Brown Vivian Brown Santa Ana CA ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2006.
