Jerry, I'd add one more thing to your 8 suggestions. Whenever I receive what I call a "Paul Revere with his hair on fire" email, I head to www.snopes.com to see if it is listed in their 25 top internet hoaxes/lies/urban legends. It's almost always listed there.
