I like the new configuration, Drew! And Peter, I have 2 thoughts about your
info graphic - is it possible to make the text boxes taller and narrower so
they follow the timeline a little more intuitively? Also is there a way to
emphasize the zero line and what it means? maybe some shading showing the
variation between it and the SPD funding line (both before and after)? I love
the summation text at the end!
Sharon's point yesterday (if I heard it correctly) about trying to put across
that the PB money would be going into the hands of people who have been doing
successful work for years - that the ideas work and the people who know what to
do are already here - reminded me of a comic my friend Carl Nelson made with
Amber Cortes (you may have already seen it):
https://thenib.com/the-emergency-weve-accepted/
I know I have stuff on my plate already but I'm also thinking of some ways we
could make some text-based pieces that do something a little similar, using
words from the Black Brilliance research report....
More soon!
Best,
B

Drew, this is wonderful! Thanks for making it and so quickly. I agree with
Peter that it might be nice to just have one text box at the top, just for
simplicity.
My only other thought is from a user perspective it might be more clear if the
defund buttons were at the top. It's just a little more intuitive to my brain
if the actions you are supposed to take go in order on the page. But that might
just be me. I say let's try it how you have it and then we can switch around if
necessary.
Thanks,
Renee

Hi Peter,
I'm so sorry I was slow to get back to you; my thought was the gifs could be
used as part of an instagram slideshow we talked about. If you think the one
gif would be helpful, go ahead and use it; my feeling is they will work best as
a group, and in combination with some accompanying text. I also think if
possible, before they get wider distribution they should be vetted with the
groups our work is supporting (like we did with the postcards) in case there's
something that rings wrong (like for instance, should the badge include the
'mourning band' or is it best left off, etc).
I'm hoping to make several more gifs (hopefully aligning with the buckets) this
week and will share them when they're ready!
Again apologies for the slow response -

Hi all!
Thank you Renee for that great summary email.
Britta, I loved the artwork you shared. Do you have a plan or ideas for where
to use it? I'm wondering if I can start sharing it with others. My weekend
project is to get a couple more people involved with the PB call to action
(Tuesday May 18 at 2 pm). I would love to use one of those images in that
effort. Does anyone know if gifs show up and animate in a signal message? I
would guess they probably do.
Here's the call to action
document<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1IVmqKeOsfcPVuqwY53eJaK9UyYJWr7VTpEk6t00ErBs%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=04%7C01%7C%7C7703538243ab41eea6fc08d920aeb52e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637576757088310491%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=E0HLyOj02zMPklBpmUNNAVUNMxxAt1hfBK7eJQi09H0%3D&reserved=0>
I have so far. It's just basically two questions. I'd love your feedback on it
and also if you have time, put down an answer for yourself!

Peter

Hello!
I got a bare-bones prototype of an interactive police defunding / PB funding
web page. It's really basic at this point and it's text only, so it doesn't
have as fun of a vibe as I would like. And I just sort of made up all of the
content just as a placeholder. I hope this version will inspire you with ideas
for images, text, or functionality that will make it more joyous and help to
get people excited for PB.

Good morning!
Thanks for capturing the notes and follow-up from the meeting, Brock. I think I
mentioned that I often revisit previous conversations (ellipses) but I've been
thinking more about the coloring book/SIMS city concept and I'm really starting
to see it (full disclosure: I know nothing about SIMS city. I had a
hand-me-down Pong atari game growing up while my friends were all playing Super
Mario - in keeping with the Gen X references). Anyway, I can imagine a coloring
book with images of police (officer with shield, cop car, surveillance tower,
etc.) in full color. Then you click on one of those images and they turn black
and white and several other images are enabled (house, garden, children at
preschool, etc.) that you can choose from to click on. Then they are in full
vivid color. Anyway, just wanted to share that image with you all this morning.

As always, it was great imagining with you all.
Thanks,
Renee

*****
Apr 29 PB creators discussion
* We discussed possible approaches to illustrate the choice/tradeoffs that
we make when we chose to fund police
* There were a lot of cool ideas - an Oregon Trail or Sim City style game,
a coloring book framework where people could fill in certain parts of a
picture. Most ideas involved some kind of interactive component to get people
to play around with the idea of funding things other than policing
* The framework that I left with most clearly in my own head involved two
components:
* Two or three Instagram "slideshows" (is that what they are called?)
with images that illustrate just how big of an expenditure policing currently
is and all of the other more healing things that we could pay for if we made
different choices. These posts would point people to...
* A website with an interactive tool that lets users select (a) some
portion of the police budget to reallocate and (b) some things that they'd
prefer to fund - i.e., housing, food, health care, mental health workers, etc.
Once selected, the tool would estimate how many of the other things we could
buy with the money that is reallocated from policing.
In terms of next steps, we discussed...
* Put stuff in this
folder<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F19VLhfw5u7g3e1yP4vsnUQSSsyt4UDgfpmcjysWQaCkI%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=04%7C01%7C%7C7703538243ab41eea6fc08d920aeb52e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637576757088350469%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=HUf4Wz05FzGlaxTBxSpNj%2FogXgyrAXh7Pf8i6OPkxow%3D&reserved=0>
(thanks Renee!)
* Drew will take a crack at setting up a simple web-based framework for the
interactive component that we discussed
* Britta (and others?) will start sketching out some illustrations that
could be used on the Instagram posts and/or website
* Brock (and others?) start to assemble research on the benefits of public
investment in things like housing, health care, food, transportation and other
basic needs
* Reconvene again in two weeks (May 12) at 7pm
* Consider seeking input from other Defund/abolition organizers once we
have some kind of prototype concept?
Some inspiration

I really like this idea! I was thinking about some kind of "interactive"
version of this where you post a set of images depicting these different

timeline. Sort of virtual participatory budgeting.
I wonder if there is a formal stat somewhere that could be used to calculate
the full cost of employing an officer for a year beyond salary, including
training, equipment, pension, administrative support, and those other mandatory
expenditures they cited to try to grab the $4.5 million back from PB. Also,
maybe in some cases we could use examples with scaled up numbers of officers.
E.g., 10 officers for 1 year = 1 year of preschool for 850 kids.
Thanks for driving this cool idea,

I don't remember the specific stat (I think they said four counselors per
school-based cop?) and don't have the school counselor salary information, but
the premise got me thinking about what other things could be funded with a
cop's salary and how we might play with this idea to illustrate the choice we
make as a city when we chose to fund cops.
I'm including a mock up below all pulled from cost estimates created for the UW
self sufficiency standard, but the applications of this concept are endless.
I think this conversation lends itself to the PB conversation, but also points
to the kind of steps that the City of Compton took recently via the Compton
Pledge<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomptonpledge.org%2Fabout%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C7703538243ab41eea6fc08d920aeb52e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637576757088470393%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=dRtMV4ocPa1pL99CiFyeYnKgZhg1w1L8DBDmTC81VoQ%3D&reserved=0>/Fund
for Guaranteed Income.
What do you think? Have folks already done something like this that we could
help amplify? Any other ideas on how we can help keep momentum?
