Goa
(Navhind Times, Goa)
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji April 17: The State Bank of India (SBI) has
drawn up a massive plan to launch a wide variety of
products for facilitating its customers with a
wide-choice as a part of an aggressive drive to expand
its base in the state.

Addressing a press conference following the launch of
the country?s first ?Bus-Q-Shelter ATM? near the
Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa, the chief general
manager, SBI Mumbai circle, Mr Ramesh Kumar said the
plans include mobile ATMs to cover remote and mining
areas, a drive-in-ATM at a petrol pump on the
outskirts of Panaji, a special scheme to finance
renovation of heritage buildings, a master-plan with a
focused attention on tourism, agriculture, industry
and ecology through a single-window clearance system,
among other things.

Mr Kumar said that the bank has made an investment of
Rs 600 crore on acquiring state-of-the-art software
and technology which has enabled it to develop its own
communication backbone with the help of the Tata
Consultancy Services (TCS) during the last three
years.

?We are second to none as far as technology is
concerned, though we were initially far behind the
private sector banks in launching core banking
solutions to facilitate anywhere banking facility. We
are now in a position to take the lead in banking
technologies, as we have become front-runners in the
sector,? claimed Mr Kumar, adding that that the
opening of ATMs, would go a long way in benefiting the
cluster of villages in the vicinity.

The SBI has encouraged Internet banking with a focus
on the corporate sector. This would not only help
disburse salaries and payments to vendors through net
instructions but also receive payments from customers
directly to their accounts with the click of the
mouse, Mr Kumar stated.

The chief general manager spoke of ?contract farming?
for cashew, mango and vanilla saying that this was
aimed at encouraging agriculture. SBI was thinking of
a special scheme to finance owners of heritage
buildings in Goa in view of the International Film
Festival of India (IFFI) in November. This would be a
part of the housing loan scheme, Mr Kumar said.

Mr Kumar said that as a part of SBI?s social
initiative each of the 50 branches in the state would
adopt a school to promote nature conservation
education to help preserve the environment, beauty and
ecology. At the same time, the bank was also looking
to identify NGOs to help promote self-help groups in
all the villages through micro-financing mode, Mr
Kumar said.

Centralised processing cells to meet the needs of the
small and medium enterprises, rural housing needs,
education, medical and other sectors would also be
opened to improve the business transactions using the
technological backbone, he said.

The press briefing was attended among others by Mr M H
Belani, assistant general manager (PR & CSB), SBI,
Mumbai, Ms K Vijaylaxmi, deputy general manager, SBI,
Panaji module, Mr S Sundereshan, general manager, NPA
management, Mr Arun Shandilya, general manager,
commercial banking and Mr Y S S Kapadi, general
manager, commercial banking.
