Hi all - it was a fun time and thx to the park people for allowing us to park
so close in. Missed the meteor but enjoyed the crowd's awe at seeing such a
bright colorful meteor. Jupiter played peek a boo with the Clock Tower, but
many were able to see Jupiter and three of the 4 major moons. One last viewer
REALLY wanted to see Mars toward the end of the evening, and after seeing that
red dot, explained that she worked for JPL and had been a part of the Mars
missions and an upcoming Europa mission .... !!!! Very glad to accommodate her
request. I had a great time talking with various folks from the conference -
all were excited and enthusiastic to participate in the star party. Kudos to
Debbie for arranging, and for being the 'lead car' to get us thru the maze of
walkways to get back out <G>.... Phyllis

Kudos for helping to bring about a spectacular Spokane night under the stars
for us, the members of the Health Physics Society (HPS) last evening.
Debbie, thank you for getting so many of your Spokane Astronomical Society
(SAS) with their telescopes to come to this event, including you.
Amy, thank you too for arranging for the necessary clearances for us to use the
very-conveniently-located King Cole Pedestrian Bridge for the starviewing.
Gene, thank you for finding that location for us. It was perfect! And also
thanks for putting the star party flyer in the goodie bags, too.
And wow! We loved the extra-bonus big and fast meteorite that produced a long
green trailing arc overhead during the star party. Thanks to you all for
arranging that. :-)

The event and turnout exceeded predictions. At one point, I counted nearly a
hundred people there

Wow, we had a wonderful turnout last night in Riverfront Park. Saturn, Mars,
and Jupiter were the highlight until the moon
peeked over the top of the convention center. There was about 50 convention
goers, give or take a few. Plus
a few people just passing by stopped to look through the telescopes. I would
even go as far and say we had about 65 people.
The vibration you get from walking on the wooden bridge was the downside.
I was able to locate the Ring Nebula. Which was a miracle in itself because the
Moon was full. it was really washed out.
just before we left I put the telescope on Mizar and Alcor for the last few
people.
I didn't get pictures. But for being in the middle of Downtown Spokane it was
pretty amazing.
We started wrapping it up about 10:30.
A big Thank You to the Accelerator Unit of the Health Physic Society for
contacting us to help make their
experience in Spokane memorable. Some people had never looked through a
telescope before and they were like
kids looking for the first time, the noises were ooooh and ahhhh's and wow. It
was great. Thank you to
Paul Yost, Phyllis Eide and Dale Isley for coming out and helping with this
event.
