Our cron job error mail was sent at 21:55 +0200, the hourly cron job
runs scamp.sh in minute 48.
Assuming that you are in the UK == +0100, I find it fairly possible that
your signature was "too new".
Do you know which mirror you downloaded from?
Not ad hoc, where would I find that info?

Apparently so, the signature file was downloaded fine later as far as I
can tell:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 clamav clamav 17308161 Sep 27 22:51 INetMsg-SpamDomains-2m.ndb
Plus the error did not occur on two other sibling machines that run the
cron job in minute 18 or 33.
