Parents,

Due to the change in temperature as well as viruses being spread, many =3D
students are sick during this time of year...

Look below for some information about the Flu and the common cold. The =
=3D
information was found at the Palmetto Richland Wellness Website:

http://www.palmettohealth.org/wellness/index.html                        =
=3D
=3D20

It's flu season=3DAFHow close is too close?

Every year we face a battle against the flu virus, and many of us lose. =
=3D
Dr. Joseph Horvath, infectious diseases physician at Palmetto Health =3D
Richland, says the best defense against the flu is to get vaccinated =3D
annually.=3D20

The influenza virus is spread through germs in the air when someone =3D
infected coughs or sneezes. The virus is not spread through touch, so one =
=3D
would be unlikely to get sick from touching a doorknob or using a hone =3D
after an infected person.=3D20

Typically the flu season runs from December to March, and affects up to =
=3D
30-40 percent of the population each year. Dr. Horvath recommends getting =
=3D
vaccinated in November, and strongly advises the frail and elderly to get =
=3D
their shots. Approximately 80-90 percent of those who are vaccinated =3D
respond well. The vaccination has no side effects, but anyone with an =3D
allergy to eggs should not receive it. =3D20

A "Common" Cold?

However "common" the cold may be, it can make you feel pretty lousy. What =
=3D
would you do to prevent yourself from getting a cold? Would you make a =3D
commitment to fitness if you were told that proper exercise could be key =
=3D
to prevention? You should. Exercise perks up your immune system and =3D
improves your cardiovascular system. However, if you overdo it with a =3D
fitness routine, you're likely to experience pulled muscles and a lowering =
=3D
in your body's ability to fight disease. Keep yourself healthy this season =
=3D
by following these tips:=3D20

Brisk walking 45 minutes, five times a week for 15 weeks increases killer =
=3D
cell activity, which helps destroy viruses and malignancies in the body's =
=3D
cells.=3D20
People who participate in a proper exercise routine experience half the =
=3D
number of days with cold or flu-like symptoms when compared with people =
=3D
who do not exercise.=3D20
Moderation is important since stressful exercise (high intensity and long =
=3D
duration) decrease the ability of certain immune cells to function =3D
properly.=3D20
