MESSAGE FROM ST. ANDREWS MIDDLE SCHOOL: (Even though this event took place this morning, many of the after school programs have encouraged their students to participate in local events in celebration of the program.) Subject: Lights on afterschool program Richland One and Community Partners to Show Support, Need for After-school Programs It's a scary but real situation for millions of American families. When the school day ends, 14 million students - including 40,000 kindergarteners - will be on their own. On Thursday, October 16, Richland One, its community supporters and school districts across the nation will host Lights On Afterschool events to celebrate the importance of afterschool programs and to support the need for even more programs for America's children. The local "Lights On" celebration includes a legislative breakfast, 7:30 - 9 a.m. at EdVenture Children's Museum, 211 Gervais Street. Besides a delicious breakfast, legislators and other community supporters attending the event can look forward to student musical performances, recognition of student poster and essay contest winners and remarks by Richland One Superintendent Dr. Percy Mack and Columbia Mayor Bob Coble. The legislative breakfast is a joint project of Richland One, the City of Columbia, EdVenture Children's Museum, the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance, Junior Achievement and SCE&G. "Richland One is grateful for the support and commitment of these organizations and businesses," said Dr. Traci Cooper, director of Richland One's Extended Day Programs. "They have provided volunteers, guest speakers, financial support and other vital services to help make our award-winning afterschool programs a success. Their involvement underscores an important fact: Afterschool care is not just an education or school issue. It is a community issue that affects us all." "In America today, more than 25% of our youth are alone and unsupervised after school, making them vulnerable to drug use, sexual activity, crime and other negative influences," she said. "Besides providing much needed childcare and a safe haven, after-school programs have been shown to improve students' grades and behavior and decrease juvenile crime. Those are positive results we all can support." Cooper noted that although Richland One is fortunate to offer a variety of after-school programs, there is a need for more after-school programs in South Carolina and across the nation.
