which is such an important part of the overall festive and carnival
impression we want to convey to our fans. Seeing the whole of Samba Nova
laid out as flag bearers, dancers, drummers and helpers is a sight to
behold. There's nothing else like it in Halifax or dare I say it in the
whole region. We've put out an invitation to the Halifax Circus people for
any jugglers or stilt-walkers to join us, something like we used to have at
the Jazz Fest parade (we had those gigantic puppets then too).
I'll be contacting specific helper people separately:
*Here are some details you should know:*
*Preparation and Arrival*
- Please inspect your instrument, strap and accessories carefully on
Tuesday to make sure it (and you) can stand up to the rigours of the
parade. Torture test the stuff as you don't want a belt coming loose or a
stick to snap mid-way on Maracatu with a horse-drawn carriage full of
municipal councillors or a Farmer's Dairy diesel truck riding up behind
you. I'm going to bring Ziploc bags and a marker to practice this week so
you can identify your favourite strap for ease of access on Saturday.
- Our spot number will be known later this week and will be emailed
out to everyone.
- *The instruments will be leaving St. Matt's at 10:00 am on Saturday
(transport crew please stand by for the request to help)*. At least
one person stays with the instruments after drop-off at the Dockyard around
10:30 while the cars are parked. We'll try to keep one car at our beginning
point if possible but no guarantees we can do it.
- *Everyone else please arrive at noon or earlier - we want everyone
holding our instruments and ready to play by 12:30pm* - remember that
the cars will be gone by 12:30 at the latest and we can't hold gear for
late arrivals so if you arrive after that you may not be able to retrieve
what you need (instrument, accessories, flag, etc)
- Enter the DND Dock Yard from Barrington Street directly below the
MacDonald Bridge - Access from Cornwallis St. is not permitted and will be
barricaded.
- Check Point #1: All traffic entering the Dock Yard will need to stop
at Check Point #1. If your vehicle is not the vehicle being used in the
parade, you will be directed to the parking areas immediately. Only
vehicles used in the parade will be allowed past this point, except for
quick drop offs.
- There will be drop off areas alongside the cordoned off area,
however, these spaces are limited and drop offs need to be extremely quick
(5 minutes). Drop off vehicles will then have to proceed down Valour Way
towards Cornwallis Street and back out Barrington St. to return to parking
areas.
- Dropping off people and supplies will not be possible within the
cordoned off marshalling grounds.
- Check Point #2: Entrance to the cordoned off area will be permitted
only to registered vehicles and participants on foot. *Check Point #2
is the main information and check in area.*
- Sorry if all this drop-off stuff is hard to follow, this is how we
go it from the parade organisers. It's a good reason to give yourself some
extra time on Saturday,
*The Parade!*
- The parade will begin at 1pm sharp.
- There will be bottles of water and a Sharpie marker in our Little
Red Wagon (LRW). Write your name or initials on the cap of your water
bottle so you can find it again.
- Please bring your own water to carry on a sling or whatever if you
can. Bring your own sunscreen too or lather up beforehand and give it a
chance to soak in.
- Please try to limit extra stuff as the LRW is pretty small.
- ProTip: Serpentine Studios carries biodegradable glitter.
- The Moment of Silence will commence when the parade reaches
the corner of Spring Garden and South Park St.(approx 1:45pm) The lead
parade entry will be the only person to initiate the beginning of The
Moment of Silence. They will raise their hand to begin the process of
silencing the parade. Once you see the moment of silence starting, you can
also alert the parade participants behind you that the moment is starting
by raising your hand and silencing any music. Please ensure that all
participants in front and behind you are preparing themselves for the
moment of silence. Visibly check and alert others if they have not noticed
the Moment of Silence starting. All music and noise must stop as soon as
possible when we see the hands go up in the air. Music and noise can resume
after parade marshals have lowered their hands. This will end the Moment of
Silence.
- The parade will end at the Garrison Grounds on Ahern Avenue at Bell
Road, behind Citadel high school.
- The CBC video booth will be at the new library on Spring Garden Road
- let's give them a great show ok? Big smiles and unified movement are
great on camera - surdos try to coordinate movements and get the arms
up in the air - it's fun and looks amazing!
- After the parade when people have had a chance to drink some water
and recoup we usually head to Stayners for season ending drinks! Last year
we walked the instruments back to St. Matts as a group and this saves the
transport people an awful lot of running around, so please be prepared to
help carry stuff back to storage. Many hands make light work!
- Have fun on this amazing day!
Goodness gracious what a lot of detail for a samba show but if we work
together it's going to be flawless and amazing. Remember there will be
approximately 100,000 people watching us - to play your instrument and then
to hear that thunder echoing between the downtown buildings is something
you will not experience any other time in your life.
