Hello Sue
You may remember last year I came to Sydney to show my book to the writer's
group. I took the advice and submitted it for the Don Grant Award of the AIGS
(or Family History Connections as they are now known).
I am happy to report that I gained second place. The judges' feedback was very
encouraging and the constructive comments were nothing that can't be included
in any future publications (should I lose all rational thought). First place
went to a biography of a John Muston, by Robert Wuchatsch, self-published by
Stony Rises Run. His foreword was written by Geoffrey Blainey no less, and if
you read Richard's bio on his website, he has a long history in historical
circles. So I felt I was in exalted company.
I might add, that none of the nominations for the Alexander Henderson Award met
their criteria, and so was not awarded this year. The judges are very
observant, noting my inconsistencies in using 'sr' or 'snr'. They suggested I
get an editor next time!! Only if I win the lottery.
But it was lovely, though very long, day from Newcastle to Melbourne. The lunch
itself was magnificent. The speaker was Caroline Jane Knight, 5th great niece
of Jane Austen, and she wrote Jane and Me- My Austen Heritage.
So thanks for the tip. The award has given me so much confidence to put pen to
paper again.
Regards
Elizabeth
