I will be sure to pass this sad news along to Gerry Rattley, who does not have e-mail. I have kept copies of the Messier observing booklets that Wally authored, and was very appreciative of the inspiring work that Wally did in the early club years. He also conducted beginner's seminars at Jack Johnston's telescope shop in those days.

I have no doubt that many SAC members remember Wally and his excellent drawing technique that he not only drew objects himself with such clarity and beauty, but that he shared his techniques with anyone interested. I also, received the Messier award from Wally. It was a memorable day for me. I knew that he had been ill, Bob Buckner mentioned it at RTMC. Very sorry to hear of his passing, the club owes him a debt of gratitude for getting us off on the right foot. Wally was first, as far as I can remember, Deep Sky Chairman and did much to foster observing. I learned to make eye piece impressions, as did many others, from him. Learned about navigating my way through the Messier Catalog in the Virgo Cluster. How to take notes.Wally presented me with the award for observing the Messier Catalog.Funeral arrangements are listed below and are the same weekend as Five Mile Meadow. If any are able to attend please introduce yourself to Wally's daughter.Sincerely, aj----- Original Message ----- From: "L. He co-authored the Messier + Marathon List w/ Bob Buckner. Services will be held 6/16/7 @ St Jerome Catholic Church @ 12:00 PM. The address is 10815 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix, AZ. Since astronomy meant so much to Dad, we sincerely hope some of his old friends from that part of his life will be able to attend his funeral. Family suggests that in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions should be made to the St Vincent de Paul Society or Hospice of the Valley. Lisa Chestnut (Wally's daughter) 480-471-8786
