Everyone is welcome to attend--you don't have to be a member. Friday, August 8 @ 7:30 pm Speaker: Dr. Ted Dunham, Astronomer and Deputy Director at Lowell Observatory Topic: Exoplanet Transit Photometry with the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy, (SOFIA). Ted will also bring to light the true account of SOFIA's recent brush with death. SOFIA is a 747 with a big telescope mounted in the fuselage. Ted has been an astronomer at Lowell since 1996. His specialty is instrumentation. HIPO (High-speed Imaging Photometer for Occultations) is Ted's project and a key instrument on SOPHIA. Ted has been a regular at SAC updating us on SOFIA's predecessor Kuiper Airborne Observatory, SOPHIA, KEPLER and other projects since the beginning of time. He gives a great interesting talk and as usual I am sure you won't want to miss out on this one. We meet at Grand Canyon University, 3300 W. Camelback in Phoenix. Interstate 17 to Camelback, West on Camelback to 33rd Avenue (a small traffic lighted intersection just East of the big one at 35th & Camelback) Right on 33rd Ave. which is an entrance to the University, continue to the guard gate, turn left and park, walk back toward the guard gate and turn left following the lighted pathway to the last building on the right-The Fleming Building, enter and follow your ears to the classroom we meet in. A good story with a lot of relevant information can be found in this article from March 2012 _Astronomy_ magazine. https://www.sofia.usra.edu/News/sofiainthenews/astronomy_mag/astronomy_March-12.html Hope to see you there.
