Importance: High Hello Everyone! It's been a while... A scholarship was made with the money remaining ($2,623.42) after the Robert Burnham Jr. Memorial was created, set in stone, polished, installed at Lowell Observatory and celebrated! Since Mr. Burnham was a Prescott High School graduate (1949), the scholarship was written for a Prescott High student pursuing an astronomy related degree at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Last week I received the good news that Prescott High could not decide between two qualified students, so it was decided to split the money between Haley Delong and LeAnna King--both having high GPAs, an interest in Astronomy and plans to attend NAU. Another great news is that Dr. Eileen Friel, the Director of Lowell Observatory, "would very much enjoy coming to Prescott to present the awards".(!!!) This scholarship will be presented on May 27, 2010 at Prescott High School's Honors' Night. Another sincere "thank you" to everyone who supported the effort to memorialize Robert Burnham Jr. with their time, money, labor and ideas...It wouldn't have happened without you. Especially thanks to Lowell Observatory for realizing the importance of this professional astronomer's works to us amateur astronomers by letting us install the memorial there on the Pluto Scope Path at Lowell--even taking time out of hectic schedules to search the grounds for the perfect boulder and location--unbelievable! Please continue your support of this important link between professional and amateur astronomers by joining The Friends of Lowell Observatory with the note "In Honor of Robert Burnham Jr." http://www.lowell.edu/friends/index.php --not only will you have the heart-felt satisfaction of supporting an institution dedicated to the pursuit of discovery in our favorite hobby, there are reciprocal agreements for admission to many science institutions and museums throughout the United States including The Arizona Science Center and Kitt Peak plus you can visit the Robert Burnham Jr. Memorial at Lowell anytime you'd like to!
