I'm not Catholic nor religious, but I am fairly sure that "M." in female
religious names is an abbreviation for Mary or Maria (Latin form of Mary),

Given the importance of the Virgin Mary to Christianity, most nuns chose to
take Mary as part of their religious name. But because it is taken by all of
the sisters, it is common to shorten the Mary part to M.
It would be better to index as FALZON, Josephine Margaret (Sister M(ary)
Assunta)(Sister Josephine)
My best guess would be that her religious name is Sister Mary Assunta, but
since that is completely different from Josephine Margaret, informally and
outside of the cloisters she might also be addressed as Sister Josephine. But
as John points out we cannot really tell from the information the way it is
written.

I know this kind of issue has been discussed at length previously, butdoes the
attached notice mean that this woman's actual first name wasAssunta, and that
her religious name which we include as anickname was sister Josephine
Margaret? I'm just not sure what M'means.
