Have you heard of the Poor People's Campaign? The idea originated in 1967 with
Dr. Martin Luther King, who began a moral campaign against racism, militarism,
and poverty. Today, you are called to join in the rebirth of that national
campaign. The renewed Poor People’s Campaign will launch in New Mexico on
Sunday, January 14, at Nahalat Shalom, 3606 Rio Grande NW (between Candelaria
and Griegos), from 4:30-6:30.
The Poor People’s Campaign is a national call – across issue divides,
partisanship, and individual or group identity – for moral revival. Multitudes
across the country will challenge the evils Dr. King called out -- systemic
racism, poverty, the war economy -- and add one more -- ecological devastation.
Together we will redraw the lines of right and wrong.
For too long, we have all gotten used to living with evil – with racism,
militarism, ecological devastation, poverty. We have stopped seeing it,
hearing it, and noticing. It has become normal. Voices speaking out have
become background noise, easy to ignore.
To break through this immoral delusion of normality, the Poor People's Campaign
will include sustained nonviolent civil disobedience. Some will break the law;
more will lift their voices in a chorus of the no-longer-silent majority. The
Campaign is absolutely committed to nonviolence. Violent tactics or actions
will not be tolerated.
