- SB 183, Increase Working Families Tax Credit, sponsored by Sen. Ortiz y
Pino, is scheduled to be heard on 25 Feb in the Senate Corporations &
Transportation Committee. The bill increases the state credit from ten percent
to twenty percent of the federal income tax credit.
- Please email or call the members of the committee listed below to express
your support this bill.
- You can prepare, and then copy and paste your message into emails to the
committee members listed at the bottom of this message.
- You can click on the name in the list below to open an email to the
corresponding legislator. If that doesn't work for you, you can go to
https://www.nmlegis.gov/Members/Find_My_Legislator to find the email address.
Your message
- Remember, the principal purpose of the message is to show your support for
the bill.
- However, a brief justification for your position is helpful though not
essential, to let the legislator know that you are familiar with the bill. Here
are possible reasons (but please use your own words)
- The National Bureau of Economic Research has concluded the
following:"Research in the last two decades has documented large positive
impacts on net incomes for low-income families who work and dramatic
improvements in well-being among children in those families. EITC expansions of
the 1990's seem to have increased work among single parents, though they may
have induced some secondary workers to cut back. Recent research has documented
extremely important benefits for children's educational achievement and
attainment."
Tips for emails:

the legislation is scheduled in "his or her" committee.
- If you are addressing the sponsor (see above) of legislation that you
support, you may wish to acknowledge that by expressing your thanks.
- If you are addressing the sponsor (see above) of legislation that you
oppose, you may want to acknowledge that the addressee is the sponsor (for
example, use of the phrase "...your bill..." in the message) while expressing
your disagreement.
- If your own legislator is a member of the committee, acknowledge that in
your message.
